Assessment #1: Kindergarten Beginning of the Year Quick Assessment (BOY)
The beginning of the year quick assessment welcomes students to Kindergarten and quickly checks-in to see what skills students are bringing to the classroom. Specifically, the assessment measures each student's ability to identify letter names and sounds, use manipulatives to count 1 - 20, and identify two-dimensional shapes. Students' overall ability to complete each task will determine my plans for instructionand instructional strategies implemented for whole group and small group instruction.

Below you will see an above grade level, on grade level and below grade level student examples of the Kindergarten Beginning of the Year (BOY) Quick Assessment. The beginning two pages measure students' ability to identify letter names and sounds and the third page, measures students' ability to use manipulatives to count 1 - 20 and ability to identify two-dimensional shapes.
Above Grade Level BOY
An above grade Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment demonstrates mastery of the alphabet, shapes, and counting patterns 1 - 20.
The series of pictures demonstrates an above-grade level Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment. An above grade level student demonstrates ninety percent or above mastery of letter recognition and sounds, in addition to an ability to identify two-dimensional shapes and counting sequencing when entering Kindergarten. One hundred percent mastery of all the skills measured on the Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment is demonstrated by a student example displayed below.
Students who receive a ninety percent or above on each section of the Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment respectively are placed in the above-grade level classroom group for reading and math time. Students placement in this group encourages students to build upon their foundational skill mastery of the measured skills moving towards complimentary skill mastery of word reading fluency, reading comprehension, counting from 1- 100 fluently by 1s and 10s and addition and subtraction fluency with numbers 1-20.
On Grade Level BOY
An on grade Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment demonstrates familiarity with the alphabet, shapes, and counting patterns 1 - 20.
The series of pictures demonstrates an on grade level Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment. An on grade level student demonstrates in between a seventy-five to eighty-nine percent mastery of letter recognition and sounds, in addition to an ability to identify two-dimensional shapes and counting sequencing when entering Kindergarten. Seventy-six percent mastery of all the skills measured on the Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment is demonstrated by a student example displayed below.
Students who receive seventy-five to eighty-nine percent mastery on the Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment respectively are placed in the on-grade level classroom group for reading and math time. Students placement in this group encourages students to build upon theirfoundational skill mastery of the measured skills, mastering an ability to identify all letter names and sounds, identifying two-dimensional shapes, and using manipulatives to count fluently 1 - 20.
Below Grade Level BOY
A below grade level Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment demonstrates unfamiliarity with the alphabet, shapes, and counting patterns 1 - 20.
The series of pictures demonstrates a below-grade level Kindergarten BOY Quick Assessment. A below grade level student demonstrates below seventy-four percent mastery of letter recognition and sounds, in addition to an ability to identify two-dimensional shapes and counting sequencing when entering Kindergarten.
